Credit Union and MacMillan

Lisburn Credit Union partners with MacMillan Cancer Support

Lisburn Credit Union is partnering with MacMillan Cancer Support in an effort to improve the lives of local people affected by cancer.

Announcing the link up Stephen Malcolm President of Lisburn Credit Union said: “This is a partnership between two local organisations which exist solely to meet the needs of people in the community.

We are delighted to be in a position to partner MacMillan Cancer Support and have made a donation of £500 to support its work in Lisburn. Leaflets outlining the services available from the organisation to those affected by cancer will also be available from our offices on Bachelors Walk.

For 40-years the Credit Union has provided affordable financial services to people in Lisburn on a not-for-profit basis and been part of community life. Through our calendar of events we reach out to local people of all ages. Now with this partnership we are supporting people at a time when they are vulnerable.”

Claire Brown of MacMillan Cancer Support said:

“The link up with the Credit Union in Lisburn will directly benefit people living with cancer and their families. We guide people through the system, supporting them every step of the way. We fund nurses and other specialist health care professionals andbuild cancer care centres. But we give so much more than medical help.

People need practical support at home, so we provide anything from some precious time off for a carer, to a lift to hospital. People need emotional support, so we listen, advise and share information though our cancer support specialists, website and trained professionals. This partnership will help us maintain and develop these services in Lisburn”.

Borrowing Members

Without members taking loans Lisburn Credit Union would be a savings only organisation and with banks paying very little interest at the moment, then expectation of any dividend would be low.

So A Big Thank You To All Our Borrowing Members!

Lisburn Credit Union Gr8Savers

Credit Unions have had a revolutionary impact on the financial capabilities of the ordinary man in the street. Lisburn Credit Union Ltd has been providing a secure saving facility, with profit sharing, and loans at a reasonable rate of interest, to members who live within the greater Lisburn area for the past 40 years. The growth of our credit union is due to the commitment of quite a number of individual volunteers, who gave their time selflessly to provide a service to all within our community. This work continues, with a voluntary Board of Directors, and an army of volunteers who are committed to the credit union ethos.

Lisburn Lisburn Credit Union Ltd now has 6,700 members, with £9.9 million in savings, and £6.06 million out in loans to those members. In addition, we are delighted to have almost 500 junior savers, with savings of £20k.

In addition to the standard savings and loans services provided by the credit union, we offer Death Benefit Insurance (DBI), which can prove to be invaluable to families at an extremely difficult period. This insurance contributes £2000.00 towards funeral expenses, when a member unfortunately passes away.

All of our services are available at no direct cost to the member. There are no set up or transaction fees for loans, and no early repayment fees or penalties for additional lump sum repayments towards your loan.

Lisburn Credit Union Ltd President Walter Sloan said:

“To ensure that Lisburn Credit Union Ltd continues to serve our local community long into the future, we are keen to promote the relevance and benefits of saving to young people, who are ultimately the future of our credit union. We are delighted to promote the Credit Union GR8 Saver scheme, which is specifically designed to encourage young people from primary schools to get into the habit of saving.

Unfortunately children today live in an environment where instant gratification is the order of the day. This lowers the value children put on possessions and increases their expectation. The benefits of teaching children about money at an early age are immediate in the short term. In the longer term, they help to develop strong saving habits, learn how to use their money to make ‘smart purchases’ and help to avoid getting into debt at a later stage in their life. Lisburn Credit Union Ltd has worked to outline the critical role played by parents, in assisting children to develop the saving habit.

Death Benefit Insurance

Members who have joined before the age of 70 and in good health have insurance intended to cover the additional costs that are incurred after the death of a member. This insurance is paid to the person or persons who pays for the funeral and the £2000.00 may not cover all the costs but will go towards some of the costs incurred. This can be verified by production of the undertakers invoice.

Talk to our staff if you are unsure if you have cover or not.

Thinking about holidays

Summer is just around the corner and if you borrow £1000.00 for that holiday in the sun and pay it back before next summer you will have paid about £60.00 interest.
